the shelf life of food

Okay. I think I’m on an infographic kick. #sorrynotsorry. I just have to share one more with you guys – since I’ve been on the topic of food waste, and since frankly I only knew about 10% of this information. Behold – the shelf life of food (via Lifehacker).

original

It’s amazing how much time a refrigerator, let alone a freezer, will extend the shelf life of just about any type of food. Also, who knew that honey is good forever?

This was interesting to me. I always throw all our meat in the freezer as soon as I get it home from the store, and just thaw it in the fridge a day in advance before using it, but I didn’t realize uncooked meat only stayed good such a short period of time in the fridge!

I’ve heard that they actually found honey, that was still edible, in some of the Pharaoh’s tombs. Crazy, right?

The honey thing is what got to me, too, after reasding through it all! Someone gave me some raw honey in January and with no idea how to store it, I put it in the fridge. I guess that doesn’t make sense because my store-bought honey-bears always stay in the cabinet, lol. Should’ve done some research. I googled and it said I could still take it out of the fridge with no adverse effects, so here’s hoping. I’ll probably keep some out and freeze the rest because I hardly ever use honey with any kind of frequency. Cool infographic!
